Specially designed two day classes for building a body of work that demonstrates the breadth of visual skills and critical understanding required for successful application to art school.

Esther designs and delivers all the classes at Tantallon Studios. She ran the Degree Foundation Portfolio Preparation Programme at Stevenson College Edinburgh from 2001-2007 and works in collaboration with her father Dave Cohen, Ceramic Artist ( Former Head of Ceramics, Glasgow School of Art) and her sister Kirstie, the Scottish landscape painter to design courses delivered at the Studios.

Hello, Esther will be opening her Studio every Wednesday in May from 11– 7pm. Everyone is welcome to stop by for a chat and a coffee, have a look round, try making something in clay, or even draw or design something at the Studio.

An introduction to the language of drawing as a basis for all types of visual art practice. Using the 9 visual elements that are central to learning how to draw, you will be introduced to line, shape, tone, colour texture, scale, form, space and light using geometric forms and everyday objects. The application of each of these 9 visual elements is explained and demonstrated by Esther and then practiced by the student. As each one is mastered the next one is introduced, building confidence step by step. As the student begins to understand the relationship between the visual elements, they also begin to develop a structured approach to their work.

Using an original set of exercises devised by Dave Cohen (Ceramic Artist) Esther will guide you through this confidence building course for learning the principles of successful drawing.

A 6 Week course, Thursday evenings, at Marchmont St Giles, Kilgraston Rd, starting Thursday 25/10/12. Places are limited, please book early!  Course fee £100, payable in advance.

Join this one day workshop with Kirstie exploring the wonderful process of paining with oils. Suitable for beginners . Sunday 7th October £55 / £65 including materials. Please contact the Studios to book your place.

This image is a still from an animation I made using the ipad and app Brushes (the one Hockney uses) for a workshop I deliver at Tantallon Studios on landscape . The ipad is a fab tool to show how you can develop a visual language for yourself to create original artworks – you do of course need to know how to use the language to take full advantage of the tool otherwise all you will do is copy!

The changes being demonstrated in the animation are the decisions, the creative part of making, made visible – it’s an exciting process. If you would like to join one of my workshops where you will learn not only how to use the tool, but also how to apply the process for creating your own original artworks – please contact me anytime to book.
